What difference does it make if the limit is five???
I was just in a discussion about how much I like eating fried speckled trout and it reminded of the times before limits and slots when we would fry up those small reds.
Its tough to beat about a 12 or 14 inch redfish filleted and fried.
Just saying.

Filet em, then square it off about where it starts to taper. Grill the thick part, fry the tail (thinner). It's delicious.

Then people will do what they do now with trout . Catch 5 run in, go back. Redfish has a healthy population. Dont understand why people wanna mess with what is obviously working well.

I don't fish with bait for reds, artificial only, but I literally NEVER catch under slot reds anyway.
Where are you fishing?
I guess I see most of the fish I catch before I cast, so there's that.

So what will change if they are keeping 12 inch fish using your logic?
I understand the bull limit slot--those are reproducing fish. Those small fish, even the 16 inch legal ones--are not of reproductive age and I don't see the difference in letting people keep a 12 inch fish or a 16 inch fish.

More like 4-5 years old and 28'.
LDWF measures escapement of age 4+ fish. This is when the transition to adults and m9ve offshore to spawn.
However, the number of age 4+ fish escaping since the last stock assessment was public released (2005)had drastically increased, especially post 2010 or so if I remember.

ETA: age comps also shifted toward older age classes.

It's all good. It's the breeding stock for sure the problem is there's no pressure on the adults and n9body has the slightest clue on the size of the offshore population of spawning Red Drum.
They should open up a limited fishery offshore. Let folks fish, promise that they will give the otoliths to LDWF.
shite even tag and release concerted effort would be great for the offshore pops. Just have to make sure they sample non-selectively.
Red Drum is considered a data limited stock solely because there exists little to no info on the adult population and there age structure.
Get a concerted effort to sample those guys and gals and then you can really know what's going on!

Things look a little...little different from that.
A little more than a decade has passed.
You see they've updated other species since that time! More frequently too!
Really don't know why they haven't updated it. It's not required to be released unlike Striped Mullet
ETA: they might have updated the commission at one point in time, but usually those updates are very limited in scope.
